Even Gaga is obsessed, so why wouldn't we be?

'When all else fails, trust yourself' is something Grammy winner Doechii lives by. The American rapper, singer, and songwriter has skyrocketed in fame over the past year for her viral appearances and quirky style, but the one moment that seemed to change everything for her? Her Grammy performance from February, where she not only proved to herself that she's a star, but she proved to the entire world that she's someone who isn't going off your radar anytime soon. Performing most of the production in a jockstrap, Doechii blew away viewers with her performance of Denial is a River and Catfish, showing her fans that she's here for the long haul.

Mother Gaga- Lady Gaga, if you're formal- expressed her admiration for Doechii in an email to Vogue, writing, “You don’t often see someone come out of the gate with a pen that feels immediately legendary. That’s Doechii to me. I fell in love with her music and her raw, deeply personal perspective. The power in her words, her vulnerability, the way she rhymes with this wild mix of audacity and emotional precision – it struck me to the core.”
Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, better known by her stage name Doechii, was raised in sunny Tampa, Florida, and has known music for as long as she can remember. Her dad and uncle were both former rappers, and her mom, Celesia, encouraged all her children to follow their dreams, despite the limitations the family faced. This led to Doechii and her sisters pursuing a mix of activities such as ballet, tap dancing, cheerleading, acting, and even marching band. When asked about her heroes in life, Doechii simply credits her mother. After hitting a rough patch of bullying in her school years, Doechii decided it was time for a change. Picked on relentlessly for being dark-skinned, shy, and being herself, she considered suicide as a way out before realizing how far gone she was. No longer would she let people dictate her life, how she sees herself. While journaling in her diary soon after this, a voice came to her: "I am Doechii." The birth of her alter-ego. The beginning of it all.
"I was born to do this."

Throughout all of her challenges and triumphs, one thing remained clear. Doechii knows who she is, and her big sister energy really shows. She's real, honest, and there for you when you need her. Her vlogs (come on, YouTube queen) have been left up on YouTube just in the small chance one of her fans needs her on a particularly rough day. She even spoke directly to those needing some inspiration in her Grammy acceptance speech, saying, "Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic, or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.” This right here is what makes Doechii a star. She's not just a Grammy winner, she's a symbol for being true to yourself and not apologizing for it.

On to today's breaking news (more like 1 week old news), Doechii has announced she is going on her first headlining tour, "Live From the Swamp," produced by LiveNation. This 12-city North American tour kicks off in Chicago on October 14th and ends in Seattle on November 10th. The announcement comes directly after Doechii's debut at Lollapalooza, where she finished her set by driving off in an albino alligator wrapped car. Before this, fans began speculating about a big announcement as giant albino alligators -the mascot for her bestie, Coconut the alligator- suddenly made appearances at landmarks across the country.
